My view is that this is mainly a political problem, not a technical one.

Why do I say that ?

Lets take a look at the events…

• Puppy (Pa-P) win Singapore election at the expense of losing a GRC.
• Review of the election result shows that one of the main unhappiness is public transport overcrowding and too slow.
• Puppy probably give order to SMRT to improve at all cost to show voters that they have heard their voices.
• SMRT under pressure and take the easiest way out, increase train frequency.
• SMRT implement the solution without accessing how the increase in train frequency will affect the deterioration of the track.

Was there nobody in SMRT to be smart enough to link increase frequency to breakdown ? Don’t think so.

And the winner is Tony Tan (winning by a 0.34 per cent margin, or 7,269 votes.).

Dr Tony Tan got 744,397 votes (35.19%)

Dr Tan Cheng Bock got 737,128 votes (34.85%)

Mr Tan Jee Say got 529,732 votes (25.04%)

Mr Tan Kin Lian got 103,931 votes (4.91%). This means he will lose his election deposit of S$48,000.

Total of 2,115,188 valid votes (Out of total of 2,274,773 voters).

Meaning a total of about 122,759 invalid (37,826) or uncast (84,933) votes .

.

Many people said that this is a symbolic election that show how Singaporean react to the recent “Singaporean First” policy.

Most of them said that the narrow win by Tony Tan is a slap on the face of the ruling party (PA-P or Puppy). I want to look at this from another angle.

Below is my analysis…

• First, I’ll make an assumption based on the last general election in May 2011. That puppy support of 60% election votes and opposition 40% is reflected in this Presidential Election .

• Tony Tan and Tan Cheng Bock are a representation of puppy support. Tan Kin Lian is a non-party representation and Tan Jee Say is a representation of opposition support.
• Puppy supporters (60%) was divided between Tony Tan and Tan Cheng Bock. Tony Tan get 35% of puppy supporters while Tan Cheng Bock get 25% of puppu support. To make up for Tan Cheng Bock 35%, about 10% of the voters from previous opposition supporters swing over. These 10% are the borderline voters between puppy and opposition.
• The previous 40% opposition voters decline to 30% after 10% swing to Tan Cheng Bock. The 30% get split between Tan Jee Say (25%) and Tan Kin Lian (5%).
• Based on this analysis, puppy get a total of 70% (35+35) support from voters. Meaning 10% of previous opposition supporters like what puppy did after election and change their ground.

Conclusion, Puppy has improved their voters support since the last general election, 10% (From 60% to 70%) of voters increased shows their support for recent “Singaporean First” policy. Opposition parties will need to work harder if they want to improve their standing in the next general election.

I have only a few things to say…

Role of President

• The first role that most people think of is a person of honest character who will serve as a role model of fellow Singaporean.
• The next role is a person will is the last approval signature that allow the government to touch our reserve. Meaning to say, this person must be independent from the influence of the government, posses the ability to judge and make his/her own decision. There must not be any conflict of interest when it come to making the final decision to sign on the reserve utilization form.
• It is also the role of President to make sure that our reserve is properly managed by fund managers. He/she must possess the skills and motivation to audit the account at periodic interval. If there is any signs of mis-management (Which can happen as we already saw in some of our town council fund mis-management in risky financial products), the President must be able and willing to bring it to parliament notice.
• The President also serve as a ambassador to visit other nations and establish a friendly and constructive relationship with leaders of global nations. In this aspect, the President will need to have the full support of the ruling party.

We all know that Singapore President’s role is mainly symbolic unlike those in other nations. So the result will not likely to affect Singapore future policy. But its result will be significant because it will show the complete picture of Singapore citizens approval rating on the ruling party (Without the GRC protection system).

Either the Watch Group don’t know what they are doing or they purposely ignore the problem.

The problem is food portion are getting smaller and smaller. Unless they do a weight and price monitoring, it is meaningless to say that price remain steady.

• …that Singapore government finally admit that Singaporeans are competing unequally for jobs in Singapore ? (Especially male Singaporean doing national service and reservist)
• …that “It cannot be helped” means that Singaporeans must accept the discrimination practice and government will not do anything about it ?
• …that it is a positive signal to allow employers to discriminate against local Singaporeans whenever possible ?

The next thing everyone going to ask is “What’s next ?”

My Suggestion is as followed..

• Develop the stretch of the railway track into a jogging/walking plus cycling track.
• Replace the track and rock pavement into a concrete path as shown below.
  The rocky track is nice to look at but believed me it’s not good to walk on, you can twist your ankle if you’re not careful.
  Some part of the track should be retained as a reminder of its past history.

• Bicycle renting station should be spread along the way. User renting it at one station can return it at another station.
• Drinks and food stall along the way selectively (We don’t want to turn it into another concrete jungle) where joggers and cyclists can stop for a rest and energy replenishment.
• On some stretch of the way, there may be weekend flea market stores that is open to renting by sellers.
• This will be a great tourism promotion attraction “The Singapore Mighty Green Belt”. Well, maybe the word “Mighty” is a bit too strong, but you get the idea. “The Green Belt of Singapore” may be nicer.
  Imagine a businessman, feeling exhausted after a long day work and completing his assignment in Singapore. He got a few days off before flying back to his home country. Wouldn’t it be great to take a walk, a jog or rent a  bicycle along our “Green Belt” to freshen up before the long flight home ?
• Along the way, there should be notices that show the shortest way to the nearest shopping mall, food center, other attractions and MRT station.
  The may even be some small advertisement board (Don’t spoil the landscape)  for shop owners located nearby (Within 1 km) to advertise their restaurant and etc.
